"Osun State Christian Association of Nigeria, OSCAN, has directed all female Christian students in both primary and secondary schools in the state to wear their church garments to their different schools, beginning from Monday. There was however palpable tension in some schools in different parts of the State including Osogbo, the state capital yesterday over the controversy on the use of hijab by female Muslim students during school hours.

Christian leaders having realised that Muslim girls now wear hijab to public schools, agreed that by next Monday, Christian students will begin to wear their garments such as those for Boys Brigade, ushers, Girls Guide, choristers, band boys, white garments and others.

Vanguard authoritatively gathered that messages have been sent to churches to mobilise their members to ensure that their children comply with this directive.

Already, Director of DSS in the state met Christian and Muslim leaders separately on Wednesday pleading for peace.

A judge of Osun State High Court, Justice Jide Falola had delivered a judgement last Friday in favour of a case instituted by Osun State Muslim Community against the State Government on the right of female Muslim students in public schools in the state to use hijab on their school uniforms.

Nigerians should hold Aregbesola responsible — PDP
Meantime, Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said Nigerians should hold Governor Rauf Aregbesola responsible, if more damage is done to the state’s education system through the brewing crises over wearing of hijab in public schools by female students.

The party in a statement issued in Osogbo by its spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said Muslims and Christians in Osun state have coexisted long before now without crises and blamed the rising tension on Governor Aregbesola, whom it accused of planning to destabilise the state for some political reasons.

''Govt has no hand in the judgment''

In a swift response, the state’s Solicitor General, Abiola Adewemimo, said; ‘’It has come to the notice of the State Government that the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN alleged that the judgment of the High Court of the State in favour of the right of female pupils to wear hijab in public schools was masterminded by the State Government.

‘’While we consider this to be unfortunate, we hasten to remind all religious groups, Christians, Muslim and traditional religious worshippers that the Judiciary is an independent arm of Government that is responsible and not under the control of the Executive in anyway.

two secondary students kissing
Annie Walsh, one of ‪Sierra Leone‬'s Grade A schools, is to expel two of its pupils after a photo went viral apparently showing them kissing in public in their school uniform.

Two weeks ago, witnesses said as the two girls were heading home from school when they both yelled “kiss me” before engaging in the kiss.

The student said their very public display of love in the form of a kiss was part of how they express themselves to perform a “non-conformist” act.

The act got them expelled from school , and now they also face disqualification from the attending any other school in Sierra Leone , too.

Meanwhile, the students said they would choose to pull off the same “non-conformist” act if they had it to do over again.

The students explussion has sparked reaction within the school, the country and also on social media . Most comments on social media were against the administration’s decision. Many Said the students have been treated unfairly.

Some comemmentator said the kiss was about drawing attention to gay and lesbian students who are treated poorly in Sierra Leone .

The ages of the girls have not been made public but in senior secondary school they should be in their mid to late teens.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has offered automatic employment to an Ex-Corps member Daniel Oluwatobi, who served in Yobe State and lost his sight as a result of his involvement in a road accident while on election duty during the 2011 general elections.
During the presentation of the employment letter to Mr. Oluwatobi at a brief ceremony held at the NYSC Directorate Headquarters Abuja, the INCE Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu thanked the NYSC for the cordial relationship between the two organisations since the signing of the MOU between them in 2010.
The INEC Chairman appreciated the contributions of Corps members towards entrenching a credible electoral process in the country, noting that they were the most committed as far as INEC duties were concerned.
Professor Mahmood used the occasion to solicit the support of the NYSC during the forthcoming supplementary elections in Rivers, Kogi and Anambra States as well as this year’s governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
In his remarks, the NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Suleman Kazaure thanked the INEC Chairman for the visit. He also thanked INEC for the kind gesture of offering automatic employment to Mr. Oluwatobi.
The Director-General pointed out that there was the need to review the MOU between the two organizations.

Speaking later in an interview, the Ex-Corps member Daniel Oluwatobi thanked both INEC and INEC for showing concern about his plight noting that with their intervention, he was now a happy person.

A University of Benin student has been denied graduation for three years despite meeting all academic requirements, and his lecturers and examination officials say they have been too busy to compile his records.

Temidayo Awoyemi, 26, had eagerly hoped to fulfill his dreams after graduation from the school’s department of chemistry. He has now spent three years after completing his studies, without graduation.

Officials in his department and faculty say they have had no time to process his records for the last two years.

The faculty checker, Professor Anthony Imiavan, in charge of scrutinizing students’ records, confirmed to GISTSTUDENTS that the student had no case to keep him from graduating.

A spokesperson for the school told this newspaper the case was “strange”, and assured it would be resolved quickly.

Despite that assurance, the school has yet to act on the matter more than a month after.

Like many other students of the school, Temidayo’s problem began in his final year when his department said his West African Senior Secondary School Certificate was not in its records. At least five other students in his class had the same problem.

Tears flowed freely on Friday at the Ikoyi Cemetary, Lagos, as the remains of Adesola Ogunmefun and Olufunmilayo Odusina, two University of Lagos post-graduate students who drowned and died during one of their friend’s birthday party at a private beach in the Lekki area of the city on June 6, 2016, were finally laid to rest.

An emotional tribute service which started as early as 11:00am, saw family members, friends and well wishers of the departed young women pour out in droves to bid them farewell.

In glowing words, mourners at the event paid tributes to the victims who many described as very charming and promising.

Sunmibola Ogunmefun, a sibling to the late Adesola, said even though the family is in mourning, they are consoled by the good life she lived and impact she made during her sojourn on earth.

“Very simplistic, you’ve never been the kind to take things too seriously and your smile is from ear to ear. Keeping malice with you was futile, you’d always find a way to break the ice…never one to hold grudge.

“Sola, in your short years on earth, you’ve connected us with so many people and your death has brought reconciliation…you are indeed a special one,” she said while paying homage to her late sister.

Modupe Mujota, a boss to the late Adesola, described her as not only a workaholic but also a young lady with a warm heart.

In her tribute, she said, “Desola took care of me. She would wake me up daily at 6am and like a child I would often beg her for 15 more minutes. As many times as I asked, she would oblige me, she was that caring.

“Desola, our loss is heaven’s gain, light it up as always with your brilliant smiles. We love you dearly.”

Born on April 12, 1989, Adesola attended the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria Staff School Ikeja, Lagos, Home Science Association of Nigeria Secondary School and Covenant University before proceeding to the University of Lagos for a Masters degree in International Law.

Until her painful demise, she worked as Personal Assistant to the Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Ogun State.

Odusina equally described as an easy-going and lovable young woman, was born on February 13, 1991.

The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the 10th governing council of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Dr. Emmanuel Enemuo has commended the out going Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Cyril Asiabaka for placing the Institution to an enviable height of excellence during his tenure.

According to Enemuo, the institution which is the nation’s premier University Of Technology established in 1980 by former President Shehu Shagari’s administration is now the 8th in the ranking of Universities in the country by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as against its former 48th position.

Prof. Asiabaka who took over the mantle of leadership of the University from the late Prof. Celestine Onwuliri in 2011 and is expected to hand over to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Eze.

“Prof. Asiabaka has brought about monumental physical development and infrastructure into FUTO and the University Is now being governed with strict sense of discipline, there are no more examination malpractices, selling of handouts, sexual harassment and cultism is now a thing of the past in FUTO.”
