This Was covered on the popular newspaper punch's website

" An Abia State Polytechnic student, identified only as Abel, has killed the landlord of one of the students’ lodges in the Immaculate area of Aba, Abia State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Abel, a final year student of the Department of Architecture, allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach during a disagreement at the lodge.

Our correspondent was told that the landlord had ordered that no female visitor was allowed to spend the night in the lodge.

The suspect was alleged to have breached the rule and was challenged by the landlord, which led to a fight between them.

In the ensuing scuffle, the suspect was alleged to have grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the stomach, before taking to his heels.

The landlord reportedly died on the spot.

His remains were recovered by the police and deposited in a mortuary.

A student of the institution, who identified herself only as Beatrice, explained that the caretaker of the lodge was the first to notice the breach of the rule, adding that he informed the landlord.

She said the landlord barged into the room and met Abel and his girlfriend Unclad, which caused the fight.

She said, “The incident happened around 9pm on June 29. The deceased had made a rule that no student living in the lodge should bring a lady to pass the night there. He also made it a rule that every visitor, be it male or female, must leave before night falls.

“However, the suspect brought home a female guest in the evening and both of them went inside his room. The caretaker of the lodge saw them and waited for them to come out, but they didn’t. He then put a call through to the landlord, who hurriedly went to the building around 9pm.

“On arrival, the landlord barged into the student’s room where he met both the lady and the student Unclad. Instead of excusing himself, he attacked the student with punches. The lady quickly grabbed a wrapper and ran out of the room into another student’s room in the lodge.

“As the confrontation continued, the student stabbed the landlord with a knife, put on his boxers and fled that night, leaving the landlord dead in his room.”

It was learnt that the incident threw the community into confusion as the matter was reported at a police station in the area.

The police were said to have launched a manhunt for the suspect with his picture posted at strategic areas in the school.

When contacted, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Nta Ogbonnaya, confirmed the murder, but said he could not tell what transpired between the suspect and the deceased.

He said the case file had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigations, adding that the police would get the fugitive.

He said, “Yes, there is a case of murder involving a student of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, who stabbed his landlord in the stomach. I cannot, however, tell what happened between them. I also don’t know the name of the landlord and the suspect. As I speak with you, the case file has been transferred to the SDCI and we are working with the school authorities to get the details of the suspect.

“I, however, want to advise him that he should submit himself to the police voluntarily. I assure that wherever he decides to go, we will get him and he will face justice.”

Efforts to reach the school authorities were abortive as the official telephone line on the school’s website was switched off.

A text message sent to the line had also yet to be replied to as of the time of filing this report."

"The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Dr. Deji Omole has expressed his opinion that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) should be decentralised.

Omole said the body is unable to conduct credible and dependable examination upon which credible universities can rely.

Omole also added that a research conducted at the university to ascertain students performance in relation to JAMB scores indicated that "higher JAMB scores has negative relationship with the performances of students at 100 level examinations."

According to Omole, JAMB has outlived its usefulness and credibility. He said that during the last examinations, there were candidates who did not finish their papers or had issues with their Computer Based Test. These candidates were awarded extra 40 marks arbitrarily without justification.

Omole alleged that the study conducted across faculties at the University of Ibadan has shown that JAMB has either a negative or weak correlation with performance at university level.

He said this indicates that "the higher the scores at UME, the lower is the performance at 100 level as shown by the Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) at university degree examination.

"The results of the research however established that the performance at SSCE or NECO is statistically significantly correlated with CGPA. This shows that the performance at SSCE may be a good determinant of student's academic ability to cope with university education because of their high performance at 100 level.

"How are we to admit based on a Board that awards arbitrary marks to students? As it stands, University of Ibadan can only admit 10 percent of those who apply to it." "

A couple of Nigerian students were interviewed on their preference over either cash disbursement or academic grant involving an arrangement with their institutions. Well, as one would imagine, the conversation got trailed by series of mixed reaction. Here are a few excerpts below:

Joshua Adeleke from UNILAG: To me, I prefer cash, because looking at the way things are in the economy, unemployment rate is higher. Prices of capital items are dwindling and there are no longer stable white collar jobs one could rely on anymore. I believe if any student can exhibit an outstanding performance to win any scholarship award. Such student shouldn’t have a problem thinking of a way to build something meaningful with the appropriate capital. Its just my view from the entrepreneurial perspective.

Sandra Nwala from YABATECH: Well, I think cash is better, because nowadays, a lot of families are struggling to keep up with the average standard of living and most times, we find out that these families have more than a single child in a Nigerian university. Tell me, if one of the children should win a scholarship of say N200,000 at 400level – I’m sure what the student would require to complete his/her academic pursuit in the tertiary level wouldn’t be up to N100,00. So, the balance could still be useful in helping out their siblings.

Kenneth Okonkwo from FUTO: Cash is better. This is because sometimes, you would want to buy textbooks and pay for group projects at school. In this kind of situation, you don’t expect the organising body to hearken to your needs because they will think you are unserious, but it’s really hard to keep up with these things when they come calling. I feel if they can start awarding cash, even the beneficiaries can still do one or two businesses in the campus to multiply the amount they won.

Tega Oshoniyi from UNILORIN: It pays to have an arrangement with the school because some students can spend this money on something not so meaningful. I mean, I could win a scholarship and take the cash to go get some clothes, shoes and bags if I want. But having an arrangement with the school helps put me in line.

According to the views expressed above, one could see what the majority would rather go for. However, Tega doesn’t share the same school of thought with her colleagues from other institution. Please note that this does not reflect the views of the vast majority from their respective institutions though.

As JAMB has commenced the posting of candidates to schools (which can be termed provisional admissions), any curious mind will not help but wonder the criteria used for these postings.

Yes! It’s obvious that the schools you selected as your choices during JAMB registration is part of the criteria. However, in previous years, there’s what is called departmental cut-off marks for schools.

Each school has its own cut-off mark for a particular course or department depending on the competitiveness of such course/department. For instance, you can’t expect the cut off mark for Microbiology to be the same with that of Medicine and Surgery in a school like UNIBEN or expect a course like Petroleum Engineering to be 180 ordinarily.

The question now is, does JAMB put this factor into consideration in posting candidates to the different schools?

If yes is the answer, it means each of the tertiary institutions has to send departmental cut-off marks to JAMB which JAMB is to use to determine the candidates that qualify for a particular course in a given institution.

If that is the case, there’s tendency that JAMB will not post candidates who do not meet the required cut-off marks to study their selected courses in their choice institutions but rather may push them to other related courses/departments that can accommodate their scores in such institution.

Another questions is, what happens if there are no other related courses/departments in such institution that can accommodate such candidate? I think your guess is as good as mine.

This may also be the reason why many candidates are yet to see their admission postings since it will apparently take additional time to plan the redistribution of candidates, who do not meet the departmental cut-off marks to study their choice courses to other related courses/departments.

I was just thinking this aloud and decided to put it in writing to know your views. So, what do you think?

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) rejects in its entirety the introduction of N2,500 as admission screening fee by the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education.

Mr Gbenga Ayenuro, the NANS Vice President, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure on Friday.

According to him, it is surprising, appalling, anti-masses and unethical, for the federal government to submit to pressure from the heads of tertiary institutions by introducing the post-UTME screening fee.
Ayenuro said that NANS viewed the introduction of the post-UTME screening fee as another way of extorting and exploiting potential students.
He alleged that it was another avenue of enriching management of various tertiary institutions across the length and breadth of Nigeria.
Ayenuro therefore issued a three-working day ultimatum to the ministry to reverse its decision on imposition of post-UTME screening fee as the most important stakeholder in the Nigerian education sector.
He said that failure to reverse the new policy would result in a peaceful protest at the Ministry of Education, Abuja, at a date to be announced.
