It’s a beautiful Monday morning, perfect for your Political Economy class. And you’re ever ready, looking cool and sassy, waiting for your Professor to arrive.

He’s arrived. He’s delivered perfect 1 hour: 48 minutes lecture. But something happened before he stepped his legs out of the class.

‘Take this as an assignment,’ he commands. ‘Define the term ‘political corruption’ and stress its impact on Nigeria’s economic stagnation. Submit next week.’

Now your beautiful day turns ugly, because you hate writing assignment or any essay writing.

You feel it’s too demanding, exploiting, too much a threat to your leisure time. So, you threw that assignment in the pit of rage and never looked back.

It’s really OK that you’re having this feeling. You’re not alone. Most students hate assignments. In fact, you should have these feelings because no Nigerian university – that I know of (and you can correct me on this one) – has writing course in its curriculum, even though, I think universities should, as a matter of urgency, incorporate writing in their curriculum.

Therefore, it’s normal to feel scared at writing an assignment because, writing, like any other art, requires years of training, practice and commitment.

If your assumption is that: assignments are mostly done in written form; I’m not good at writing; and, therefore, I can’t write any assignment, then these tips will help you reconsider your thoughts.

Understand the question(s) first.

The first thing that you should do, once you’re giving an assignment, is to try and understand the question thoroughly.

I know this sounds pretty obvious, but seriously, most students, even when they think that they get the assignment question; in reality, they don’t. And the reason is that, their attention and interest is way off from the assignment question that’s being asked.

And when there’s no focus and interest and attention, then there will be no thorough understanding of the assignment question. And without really understanding what problem your professor is asking you to solve, there’s no way you can write your assignment, no matter how simple and straightforward it sounds.

To get laser focus at understanding your assignment, you need to:

 Befriend the question (literally).
 Smile at it.
 Get to know every sentence, every word in that question.

I also recommend that you translate the assignment question – word for word – in your mother tongue – just so you master the question even more. This is how I have been reading over the years and that has helped me passed my exams (pretty well) at every level in my academic career.

You also need to be critical when making sense of the assignment question. Don’t just rely on the wordings of the assignment; uncover what your professor implies.

Once you’re sure of what the assignment requires you to do, then move further to the next step: research materials.

Determine your keywords

These are the words/phrases that are the building blocks of your question. In the assignment question which reads: ‘Define the term ‘political corruption’ and stress its impact on Nigeria’s economic stagnation,’ for example, your keywords are:

 political corruption
 economic stagnation

Why does finding your keywords important for writing your assignment?

1. They will tell you what materials to search for.
2. They’ll help you stay focused on your research and writing processes.
3. They’ll help speed up your writing.

So, find your keywords and keep them handy.

Know where to source your research materials

There are a billion websites, blogs, podcasts and other valuable channels on the Internet. Where would you source your research materials?

Google is the Internet’s no. 1 search engine. It gives you the answer to virtually everything you ask her. But, sometimes, Google’s answers are not direct, relevant or credible.

Low-ranking sites are buried within the algorithm of the search engine giant and using materials from these sites might hurt your assignment.

Use Google Scholar instead. It’s a great search engine that was created and managed by Google. And it’s very simple to use.

Structure your ideas

Now that you have expanded your knowledge on the subject and figured out what to say, the next thing to do is to organise or structure your thoughts. In other words, build a skeleton for your assignment.

Think of it as an architectural blueprint of a house. The blocks, the sand and cements are all used to construct the beautiful house on that blueprint. The structure, the points you intended to discuss in your essay, are your blueprint.

All other words you put in there are the meat of your body.
For example, using our assignment question example, you can structure your ideas as follows:

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Meaning and Explanations of Political Corruption in Nigeria

 1-3 definitions of political corruption
 1 classical example of political corruption in Nigeria

1.2 Effects of Political Corruption on the Slow Growth of the Nigerian Economy

 political corruption and infrastructural decay
 political corruption and epileptic education
 political corruption on economic growth

1.3 Conclusion

 summary
 recommendation

References

Write, Edit and Reference

Now, just fill in the points with flesh and blood (valuable words).

Don’t expect your written words to be perfect at this time, because they’ll never be. Just write, not minding grammar goofs, spelling mistakes and technical information.

After you’ve written your ideas, it’s the right time now to edit.

Unlike during the writing stage, now you pay serious attention to your broken sentences, grammar goofs, spelling mistakes, check for correct data/information and so on.
It’s the editing that makes your assignment outstanding; therefore, make it perfect.

Also, don’t forget to reference all your work. Unlike opinion-based articles, your essay writing assignment must include a reference section where you list all the works you’ve cited (used) in your article.

Conclusion

I have to admit: writing an assignment is a little bit difficult. Sure, it’ll take you 3 hours or 33 days before you write that 2-page homework that your Prof. will grade favourably, especially if you’re not use to the task. But here’s the good news: You can learn it.

If you follow the tips I’ve outlined in this article and stay committed and patient to writing, you can write that 2-page assignment without any fuss or insulting your Prof.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has faulted the guidelines released by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for admission of candidates into Nigerian tertiary institutions stating that JAMB acted beyond its powers.

According to the union, the Senate of Nigerian Universities has the mandate to regulate admission modalities as each university has standards which are not subjected to the whims and caprices of any government appointee.
Speaking, the Chairman of the union, Dr. Deji Omole, said both the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, first got it wrong by going against the administrative charges collected by institutions for post-UTME and later reversed their stand in their guidelines which he described as illegal and designed to favour children of the rich against the poor.
He mentioned that the point-based scoring system in the guidelines is not new as it has been used in UI 5 years ago and abandoned.
He equally stated that JAMB is only trying to cover up their inadequacies as its credibility is yearly queried. He pointed out that last year candidates were pushed to private universities against their will and this year JAMB awarded 40 marks to some candidates without justification.
He further mentioned that with the stipulation on the current guidelines many candidates will be disadvantaged and JAMB would have succeeded in entrenching corruption and further kill tertiary education in the country.

The Secretary-General, Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU), Prof. Michael Faborode in a statement issued on Wednesday, stated that the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in the tertiary education sub-sector have agreed on N2,500 as the fee for post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening.

According to him, the agreement was reached after a deliberation of officials of the ministry, federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
He mentioned that going by the statement made by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan at the meeting, there is no objection to screening by universities as long as it is not another CBT.
According to the statement, the association will formally convey its position to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

Reactions and counter-reactions have been trailing the release of the new JAMB admission screening model, which is supposed to be a guideline for admitting students into tertiary institutions in the country.
What many do not know is that the admission process into Nigerian tertiary institutions has never been and will never be transparent or predictable as long as the current factors surrounding it remain.
What I mean is that even with the current JAMB admission model, you still cannot confidently tell if you are qualified or not qualified for admission this year.
Until the admission model becomes such that a candidate can confidently predict his or her admission before the admission list is released and it turns out so, then we still do not have a credible admission model.
What makes you even think that institutions will religiously follow this model without undue compromise? By the way, don’t mind my tone. I’m only trying to bare the situation in black and white.
JAMB has disclosed that institutions will only screen candidates sent to them by JAMB. The question is on what basis will JAMB determine the candidates to be sent to a particular institution? Don’t try to guess. The simple truth is that you don’t really know.
As long as factors like catchment area, educationally less developed States (ELDS), admission quota, and other subtle ones remain determinants of admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, I don’t think the new JAMB admission model makes any substantive difference because at the end of the day you still won’t be able to determine or tell what factors qualified or disqualified you for admission as the case may be.
This has always been the situation in previous years, where by a candidate that scored above the required cut-off mark for a particular course is denied admission and another candidate that scored less is given admission into the same course. Do you think the new JAMB admission model will change any of that? No way! As long as the factors I mentioned earlier remain, nothing will change in that regard.
In most countries, tertiary institutions have their requirements, once you meet the requirements, your admission is as sure as death. It’s that simple. But you cannot say that about Nigeria. May be we will develop to that level with time when our institutions have developed the capacity to accommodate the teeming population of admission seekers yearly. But for now, the present reality remains.
If you are still wondering what I am driving at, let me spell it out; admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions as it stands is more like 50% effort and 50% game of luck.
So instead of breaking your head over what the new JAMB admission model means and does not mean, you should rather make sure you put in your own part of the 50% and then count on luck, influence or what my church folks will call divine favour to produce the other 50% for you.

Nigerian Creates Bicycle Chain Charger. Innovative Or Dangerous??????

A hot debate is going on on Nigeria Twitter right now as to whether this man's creation of a bicycle charger is innovative or dangerous.

According to Pamela Braide, she met Isa in Bida, Niger state. They haven't had light for the past two weeks and to survive, Isa created this. He charges N50 per appliance. See how it works below and let's know why your thoughts are about this innovation, guys.

1. There are 2.5 trillion (give or take) of red blood cells in your body at any moment. To maintain this number, about two and a half million new ones need to be produced every second by your bone marrow. That's like a new population of the city of Toronto every second.

We are dedicating this thread towards enlightening candidates seeking admission into higher institutions on what the recently proposed JAMB Admission screening model for admissions actually means.

For the sake of emphasis and clarity, the raw facts will be omitted. What you have here is the interpretation of the raw facts to allay the confusion of many candidates. But if you are interested on the raw facts, you can find that HERE.

If the proposed model for admission as proposed by JAMB is to be adopted for 2016/2017 admission process, below is how the admission process will run and all you should know about it.

1. JAMB must offer a candidate an admission before such candidates qualifies for screening in the institution he or she has been provisionally admitted. This means that institutions can only screening candidates sent to them by JAMB as having been provisionally admitted in such institution.

2. Institutions admission screening processes will now be based on point system. The first on the point system is the O'level grading. Candidates who have only one O-level result will stand a better chance of gaining admission than candidates with 2 results. One 0'level result = 10marks/points while two O'level results = 3 marks/points.

>> List of Universities that Accept Combination of O’Level Results

Similarly, each grade will now have its equivalent points/marks in this manner; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks which means the having better grades in your O'level result gives you a better chance of securing admission.

>> List of Accredited Universities in Nigeria With Websites, And Other Thing

The next to be considered on the point system is your UTME Score. Candidates will be awarded marks/points based on their 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points. The higher your score, the higher your chances of securing admission.

This means that what we previously know as institutions cut-off-marks will now be known as institutions cut-off points which will be arrived at after putting all the aforementioned into consideration.

3. JAMB provisional admission is now a means to an end and not an end itself. This means that JAMB may offer a candidate a provisional admissions and such candidate will still be denied admission by his/her institution because he or she comes below the cut-off point for his/her course in that particular institution.

>> See The NUC's List of Approved Universities For e- Learning

For instance you may be given provisional admission to study MBBS in UNIBEN by JAMB having obtained a UTME score of 260. If your institution's cut-off point for medicine is 95 points and you come below that number of points after the screening, you will likely be denied admission.

4. Admission process will still put into considerations factors like catchment area and ELDS (Educationally Less Developed States) in determining the number of candidates admitted. Admission by merit is 45%, catchment area 35% and ELDS 20%.

The issue of Science to arts ratio will still be in place. For universities Science to arts ratio will be 60:40 , Polytechnics 70:30. However for specialized institutions (Technology, Science Agriculture etc) it will be 100% related to their specialty. Also 90% of admission will go to UTME candidates while 10% will go to Direct Entry candidates.

5. Schools are still at liberty to charge a certain fee for the screening of candidates. However, the Board did not stipulate how much institutions are to charge for this.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are towards a doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD). They are taken at Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation. Without exception, the Vanier CGS is tenable only at the eligible Canadian institution that submitted the nomination. Foreign citizens like Nigerians are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

The scholarships is worth $50,000 per year for three years, Approx. N17,350,000/Yr.

Eligibility:

• be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation;

• be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

• intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university; Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;

The Federal Government today extended the Eid-il-Fitr holiday to Thursday 7th, July 2016.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau and signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Bassey Akpanyung in Abuja.

According to him, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has disclosed that the Ramadan fast will continue till Tuesday due to the “non-sighting of the moon” heralding the month of Shawwal in the Muslim calendar.

Following this, the federal government has now declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holiday.

He urged Nigerians to use this period of sober reflections to ensure harmony, unity and peaceful co-existence and at the same time give their full support to the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in his sustained effort to pursue socioeconomic and political growth of the nation.

The class of 2016 of Covenant University has been advised to be mindful of the company they keep which is able to determine what accompanied them in life. They were also told to maintain good character in order not to lose everything.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Charles Ayo gave the advice during the 11th Convocation Ceremony tagged, “The Release of Eagles2016” at the University campus on Friday, June 24, 2016.
Professor Ayo said, “Please remember that managing success is a difficult task. Be mindful of your identity. A lot of persons desire to see what you have seen, hear what you have heard and tread where you have trodden but never had the privilege. Eagles don’t flock, they soar. Be mindful of the company you keep. Remember, the companies you keep determine what accompanies you.”
The Vice-Chancellor also used the occasion to reel out the strategies engaged by the University in the last four years to achieve the level of success it attained in a speech he titled, “Celebrating the Faithfulness of God upon the University.” “To the glory of God, by His divine and faithfulness, we have instituted strategic goals that have distinguished us as clear leaders among the comity of universities not only in Nigeria but in Africa in general.”
Some of the strategies, according to him, include compulsory internship for all students to gain industry experience; additional certifications in ICT, Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Foreign Language; monthly Town and Gown seminar series in all departments to bridge the gaps between theory and practice; establishment of industry Partnership Directorate to drive product commercialization.
Others are introduction of mobile learning system for improved external and internal efficiency; elastic budget for overseas conference support and international exposures and establishing of the ‘Dreamers Initiative’ to raise thinkers, solution providers and entrepreneurs among the students.
All these strategies, the Vice-Chancellor said, has won awards and recognition for the University. These include the African Private University of the Year (2015); special Congressional Commendation from the US Legislative Black Caucus for pioneering excellence and innovation in tertiary education in Africa (2016); one of the top 10 universities in the 2016 IBM Watson Analytics Global Competition; number 2 university in Nigeria and 3 in West Africa as well as number 1 in Web Repositories in Nigeria and West Africa (2016) among others.
The University also obtained a total of six patents with four of them received in the 2015/2016 Academic Session. This, the Vice-Chancellor stated, justified the University’s goal of ‘Innovation, Product Development and Nation Building.”
Meanwhile, a total of 154 Postgraduate and 1, 495 Undergraduate were released as ‘Eagles’ in the 2016 Convocation Ceremony. The breakdown of the postgraduate degrees showed 21 Ph.Ds, 108 Masters, 7 MBA and 18 PGDs.
The undergraduate degree classification showed 157 in the First Class category, 707 Second Class Upper (2.1), 513 in the Second Class Lower (2.2) and 118 Third Class degrees.

Eight people have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident along Kisii-Ogembo road near Sameta Lounge on Friday night July 1st. Majority of the deceased were university students (pictured above) who were returning from a party. According to the source of the photos, the one in a dress with brown boots survived.

They were on their way back from Kisii where they had attended an all white party on Thursday night at Club Dallas. Three vehicles, including a canter, a saloon car and a Noah were involved in the accident. All occupants in the Noah perished with three passengers in the canter surviving with serious injuries, SDE Kenya reports.
