Governor sponsors 30 female students. Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has reportedly awarded scholarship to 30 female students from the State to study medical courses in Uganda. PM News reports that the Kaduna government, represented by Commissioner for Education, Dr Shehu Adamu, in a statement, on Tuesday, January 12, said that the chosen students will leave Kaduna sometime this month.
He said the aim was to encourage girl-child education by enhancing access to educational opportunities. Adamu also stated. during his speech in Kaduna, that all teachers on deputy director level serving outside classrooms must return to classes before being promoted as director henceforth. He said the policy, which came into effect from January 1, was to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in public schools. The commissioner stressed that such personnel must also sit for promotion examination before their elevation.

The Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to go on strike on February 14th, 2016 if their demands are not met. If this happens, the 1st semester examination for 2015/2016 which is suppose to have commenced by then will be affected. This was disclosed by the NSUK ASUU Chapter chairman, Dr Theopholius Daniel Lagi. According to him, non-implementation of promotion, dilapidated state of the university’s Law Faulty, appointment irregularities, lack of discipline, high tax deduction on Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), ambiguity in the university’s guideline, as some of the issues yet to be addressed by the university and the state government. The chairman stated that although the union will not be happy to embark on the strike as it will disrupt academic activities but they would have no other option if the management remains adamant.

The closing date for the registration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as announced by JAMB, has been extended till 5th February. We therefore wish to advise all Giststudents readers who are yet to purchase their 2016 UTME forms to do so on or before February 5th, 2016. This also extends to candidates who are still waiting for supplementary or additional list of their choice schools for the 2015/2016 admission year to be released. It is always a bad idea to have all your eggs in one basket. There is no 100% guarantee that your name will appear on the list even if the school eventually releases it. To be on a safe side, get the JAMB form before it expires. That way, even if you miss the 2015/2016 admission, you will still stand a chance in the 2016/2017 session. Also remember the examination is expected to commence February 29th 2016 (all things being equal). The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, at its 38th convocation ceremony held recently awarded 89 first class degrees to 89 students. According to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Garba, 2,086 made 2nd class upper, 7,108 made 2nd class lower, 3,161 made third class, 262 had pass while 443 had unclassified Degrees. Also 4,598 students were conferred with higher degrees; 305 Ph.Ds; 2,669 Masters of Arts and Masters of Science; and 1,624 Post Graduate Diplomas.
