Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, IAUE begs National body of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to recall IAUE branch.

The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor Joseph Kinanee has appealed to the National body of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to recall IAUE branch.
He made the appeal when he met with the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Port Harcourt Zone Professor Beke T. Sese and his team who were at the campus to interact with their members.
The Vice Chancellor who stated that it would not have been nice considering his hospitable nature for them to come to the campus without him asking to see them. He stressed that he owes IAUE chapter of ASUU a great deal as he had enjoyed a peaceful and harmonious relationship with them since he came upon his present position.
He enjoined the Zonal Coordinator to appeal to the National body of ASUU to recall IAUE branch adding that with the good relationship established, he would assist them to make it materialise. He also informed Professor Sese and his team that plans were on to provide a befitting Staff Club for ASUU members to recreate after work saying that the Staff Club meant for relaxation and unwinding would reduce stress resulting from too much hard work.
The Vice Chancellor revealed that the IAUE Budget monitoring committee (BMC) made up of the chairpersons of ASUU, SSANU and NASU and others that had been inaugurated had been functional and working. He furthermore said that he had restored and paid up ASUU check off dues and promoted deserving Staff who were due. He congratulated the National Welfare Officer, Dr. Emylia Jaja for her position at the National level for the second time.
Professor Kinanee thanked the National body of ASUU for show of love, support and intervention in the well being of IAUE members inspite of the branch being suspended at the national level and promised his assistance. He commended IAUE ASUU Chairman Dr. Ugochukwu Agi for functioning and working for the course of the union even in the midst of the challenges.
The Zonal Coordinator of Academic Staff Union of Universities Port Harcourt zone, Professor Beke T. Sese in his response thanked the Vice Chancellor for extending the invitation to them. He said that they had come to ask IAUE ASUU to take some vital decisions about members and was pleased and humbled that the Vice Chancellor asked to see them to reason along with the union.
He opined that it was rare for that kind of disposition to happen considering the antagonist disposition by the previous administration. Professor Sese said that he was glad that the report that they had heard about Professor Joseph Kinanee was true and good and encouraged him to continue and keep up the good work.
The Zonal Coordinator pointed out that Vice Chancellors were first and foremost ASUU members and should partner with the union for the Progress, growth, development of the institution and welfare of members. ASUU according to him, was known for discipline and due process and violation of its rules was therefore not tolerated. He noted that he was aware of efforts made to recall IAUE branch and welcomed them to attend Zonal Meetings. Other branches had according to him gone through the same process after their suspension because the union was not in the habit of bending its rules.
Professor Beke T Sese affirmed that he was certain that with determination and good will the union would get back and promised to make the appeal to the National body for the branch to be recalled. Welfare of members he said was paramount and priority.
The Zonal Coordinator ASUU, Port Harcourt zone described Professor Joseph Kinanee as a messiah and light brought to people suffering and in bondage and reminded him that he would spend more time as an ASUU member than as a Vice-Chancellor adding that posterity would judge him if he worked hard for the well being of staff and the university.
Professor Sese said that the presence of the Vice Chancellor would help ASUU IAUE to prepare to be one of the strongest in the zone and described him as a God sent and the Vice-Chancellor of a Potentially strong zone. He also Prayed God to grant him youthfulness and strength to carry out the good work.
The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Port-Harcourt Zone, Professor Beke T. Sese was accompanied on the visit by the ASUU National Welfare Officer Dr. Emylia Jaja, the Niger Delta University ASUU chairperson Dr Stanley Ogoun, and the Rivers State University of Science and Technology ASUU chairperson Dr. Suobere T. Puyate.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has objected to the Federal Government’s directive that tertiary institutions should stop the conduct of Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, for candidates seeking admission.

The position of the union was made known by the ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi. He stressed that allowing tertiary institutions to regulate their admission process will improve the nation's quality of education.

According to him, it is not right for the government to decide the method to be used in screening candidates for admission as this will not only amount to encroachment on the autonomy of these institutions but also affect the level of sanity and quality in the system. He however stated that the FG can come in by putting in place the necessary guidelines as part of their oversight functions.

On the issue of refunding money paid by candidates for admission screening, the president of ASUU stated that it may not be easy for institutions to refund such money as it may have been diverted to other purposes.

He mentioned that tertiary institutions over the years have been under-funded and charging candidates for screening is one of the ways institutions raise fund and called on the government to live up to its responsibilities by providing an enabling environment for teaching, learning and research in these institutions.

It was garnered that a commercial bus carrying students of Federal University of Technology, Owerri was involved in a ghastly car accident today June 29, 2016 as they were heading to school from Owerri.
The incident occurred along Port-harcout/Owerri Express way as the driver of the vehicle who obviously was driving at high speed was unfortunately hit by an oncoming heavy duty truck.

An eye witness who spoke with our correspondent confirmed the incident and also gave an account of what happened. He said, "I was rushing to catch up with a meeting I fixed in school by 3pm. In fact if it was possible I would have flown. I entered a bus going to FUTO. Approaching a round about, I beckoned on the driver  to slow down. As if I knew, a trailer was coming on the other lane, and before we knew what was happening the trailer pushed our  vehicle one side, hitting my side(front of the bus). Nobody died, although some people were traumatized. I  was the most injured as I had a slight wound on my left eye. I also thank God
that I am alive and I use this medium to ask us especially commercial drivers to drive with all driving rules". The victim is currently receiving  medical treatments.

As at the time of filling this report, we couldn't contact the driver of the bus and we categorically state that NOBODY died in the accident and that the accident occurred due to the recklessness of the driver.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has directed all tertiary institutions that have conducted post-UTME examination to immediately refund money taken from candidates.

The minister has also declared that post-UTME examinations already taken are null and void; threatening that any institution caught still conducting the examination under any guise would be sanctioned.

The minister made this position known yesterday, in a press statement issued by Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong. The strong-worded statement reiterated the Ministry’s position that post-UTME examinations have been cancelled with immediate effect and no institution should conduct such examinations. The minister warned that once the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has certified a candidate worthy of admission into any of the tertiary institutions, that candidate must be deemed fit by the institution.

According to the statement, students who have already been offered admission by JAMB may be screened by the institutions but this must not involve the conduct of any other entry examination. The candidates can be screened by verifying their certificates but not through the conduct of examinations.

The minister stated that it is unnecessary to subject students to further examinations when they have been offered examinations by JAMB since they will still have to go through between eight or 12-semester examinations throughout their four to six years study in the institutions.

The minister, therefore, directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) and appropriate departments in the Ministry to communicate the directive to relevant agencies and institutions to ensure strict compliance.

“Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the Post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately as any university caught conducting Post-UTMNE will face appropriate sanctions. If any tertiary Institution has already conducted Post-UTME, such an exercise stands annulled and money taken from such candidates must be refunded immediately”, the Minister said.

READ:-  UNILAG Denies Post-UTME Screening Rumours

The directive to stop the post-UTME examinations was given by the minister nearly a month ago. The minister said through the statement that it was important to emphasise the directive in order to ensure that no stakeholder is left in doubt as to government’s position on the matter.

He affirmed that the responsibility for admission into public tertiary institutions lies solely with JAMB and under no circumstance whatsoever, should anybody or institution take over that responsibility by proxy.

“The ban is with immediate effect, and under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive”.

“Any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore all tertiary institutions, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education must be subjected to admission through the JAMB. At the end of probationary admission by JAMB, the candidates can be cleared (screened) for final admission. For any institution with a shortfall in admission, such institution can revert to JAMB for supplementary admission”.

“Clearing in this case (screening) entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists. After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation.
