Ajayi Crowther University Admission List

Giststudents Team congratulates all the candidates that made it to Ajayi Crowther University first batch and 2nd batch admission list for the 2016/2017 academic session.

I was 9 years old when Nelson Mandela was sent to prison on Robben Island. As a boy, I learned about him in school, and I remember seeing reports about the anti-Apartheid movement on the evening news. Decades later, I got to meet him and work with him. In person he was even more inspiring than I had imagined. His humility and courage left an impression that I will never forget.

So it was a special honor to be invited to give the Nelson Mandela Lecture in Pretoria, South Africa. I eagerly accepted the invitation and quickly began working on my remarks.

I decided to share my optimism about Africa’s future—to explain why I think the continent has the potential to change faster in the next generation than any continent ever has.

It’s because Africa is the world’s youngest continent, and youth can go hand in hand with a special dynamism. I was 20 years old when Paul Allen and I started Microsoft. The entrepreneurs driving startup booms in Johannesburg, Lagos, and Nairobi are just as young, and the thousands of businesses they’re creating are already changing lives across the continent. The potential will only grow as the digital revolution brings more advances in artificial intelligence and robotics.

But positive change across Africa won’t happen automatically. The real returns will come only if Africans can unleash this talent for innovation in all of the continent’s growing population. That depends on whether all of its young people are given the opportunity to thrive.

It is still an open question, and it is the crux of my speech, which I gave today at the University of Pretoria. It was an honor to give this lecture, and I’m grateful to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the university for inviting me.

The first time I spoke with Nelson Mandela was in 1994, when he called to ask me to help fund South Africa’s first multi-racial election. It’s not every day that Nelson Mandela calls, so I remember it well. I was running Microsoft at the time and thinking about software most of my waking hours. But I admired Nelson Mandela, I knew the election was historic, and I did what I could to help.

I had been to Africa for the first time just the year before, when my wife, Melinda, and I travelled in East Africa on vacation. Obviously, we knew parts of Africa were very poor, but being on the continent turned what had been an abstraction into an injustice we could not ignore.

Faced with such glaring inequity, we started thinking about how we could use our resources to make a difference. Within a few years, we established our foundation. It was when I started coming to Africa regularly for the foundation that I came to know Nelson Mandela personally. He was both an advisor and an inspiration.

One topic that Nelson Mandela came back to over and over again in his lifetime was the power of youth. I agree with Mandela about young people, and that is one reason I’m optimistic about the future of Africa. Demographically, Africa is the world’s youngest continent, and its youth can be the source of a special dynamism.

Economists talk about the demographic dividend and the potential for Africa’s burgeoning youth population to accelerate economic growth. But for me, the most important thing about young people is the way their minds work. Young people are better than old people at driving innovation, because they are not locked in by the limits of the past. I was 19 when I founded Microsoft. Steve Jobs was 21 when he started Apple. Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he created Facebook.

So I’m inspired by the young African entrepreneurs driving startup booms in the Silicon Savannahs from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Lagos and Nairobi.

The real returns, though, will come if we can multiply this talent for innovation by the whole of Africa’s growing youth population. To make that a reality, all of Africa’s young people must have the opportunity to thrive.

If we invest in the right things—if we make sure the basic needs of Africa’s young people are taken care of—then they can change the future and life on this continent will improve faster than it ever has.

In my view, there are four things that will determine Africa’s future: health and nutrition, education, economic opportunity, and good governance.

When people aren’t healthy, they can’t turn their attention to things like education, working and raising a family. Conversely, when health improves, life improves by every measure.

I’m especially concerned about HIV. Africa’s youngest generation are entering the age when they are most at risk of HIV. We need to get more out of the HIV prevention methods we have now –while developing better solutions like an effective vaccine and easier-to-use medicines that people are more likely to use consistently.

Nutrition is another critical area of focus for Africa. Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies rob millions of the continent’s children of their physical and cognitive potential. Fortunately, there are cost-effective solutions like making sure mothers breastfeed their infants, enriching cooking oil, sugar, and flour with important vitamins and minerals, and breeding staple crops to maximize their nutritional content. We need to make sure the people most at risk know about and have access to these solutions.

Second, we need new thinking and new tools to make sure a high-quality education is available to every child. Educational technology using mobile phones has the potential to help students build foundational skills while giving teachers better feedback and support at the touch of a button. Governments also need to invest in high-quality public universities for the largest number of qualified students to launch the next generation of scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, and government leaders.

Third, we need to create economic opportunities to channel the energy and ideas of Africa’s youth. Through the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program, countries have a framework for transforming agriculture from a struggle for survival into a thriving business opportunity. But the investment needs to follow, so that young Africans have the means to create the thriving agriculture they envision.

Africa also needs more electrical power to increase productivity. In East Africa especially, governments should invest in hydro and geothermal sources of energy, which are both reliable and renewable, as soon as possible. The immediate priority is for governments to get tougher about managing their electrical grids so they’re producing as much power as possible.

Fourth, countries can benefit from enhancing fiscal governance. Advances in digital technology is one way that governments can deliver services more efficiently.

It’s clear to everyone how big and complicated the challenges are. But Africa has proven its resilience and ingenuity time and again, and there are millions of people, especially young people, who are eager to get to work.

The future depends on the people of Africa working together to lay a foundation so that Africa’s young people have the opportunities they deserve. This is the future that Nelson Mandela dreamed of and it’s the future that the youth of Africa deserve.

The ex-student also had this to say about his alma mata

"Out of about 100 students that offered that course, about 70 of them FAILED. if about 70 people out of 100 people taking a Course fails: My view is that its the LECTURER that has FAILED & not the students, because it only means the lecturer did not impact anything in them.
I'm out of that jungle alright but I think its time things change in that Alma Mata of mine, lecturers should stop releasing their frustrations on students!...
I hear people talk about d amount of 1st Class graduates from UNILAG, Covenant or other universities in 9ja & the only thing that comes to my mind is ; "thank God, them no come UNIUYO"... The truth is UNIUYO students can read for Africa ehnn... & a lot of very-very brilliant students graduate with a grade not proportional to what they should have had because of the wickedness from some lecturers in that compound.
There is one question I would like to ask all lecturers(help me ask them too pls);
IF EVERYBODY TAKING YOUR COURSE PASS, WILL YOU DIE?"

Professor Aderemi Aaron-Anthony Atayero, a professor of Communication Engineering has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor for the Covenant University.

http://www.giststudents.com/search/label/Scholarship

The Board of Regents, Covenant University’s apex governing body has approved the appointment of Professor Aderemi Aaron-Anthony Atayero, as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Secretary of the Board of Regents, Pastor Chioma Okwuanyi, on behalf of the Chairman of the Board and Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo, made the announcement on Friday July 15, 2016 at a special meeting of Principal Officers, Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments.
Professor Atayero replaces Professor Charles Ayo, whose tenure elapsed last month.
Speaking on how the Board of Regents arrived on its choice of Professor Atayero, Pastor Okwuanyi said the Board, at a recent meeting to consider a number of eminent professors from Covenant University, decided to limit the choice to the products of the university in order to allow for continuity; somebody who has been in the system who knows where Professor Ayo stopped, and start building from that foundation.
The announcement was greeted with a thunderous applause from the audience including Professor Ayo, who described the day as symbolic in the annals of history of the university. It would have been disheartening, he said, if the university had to look elsewhere to pick his successor.
He acknowledged the contributions of all present, while expressing satisfaction that he has bequeathed a university where faculty, staff and students can walk with their heads held high across the continent of Africa.
“I congratulate the incoming Vice-Chancellor. Actually, we started the journey together… I therefore have no doubt whatsoever that Professor Atayero will be able to move the university forward at a faster rate having been part and parcel of the Vision,” said Professor Ayo.
He subsequently presented his handover note titled, ‘On the Wings of a Prophetic Verdict: Vision 10:2022’ to Professor Atayero, and prayed that God will give the new Vice-Chancellor the wisdom and the grace to take the university to a greater height.
Professor Atayero, in his acceptance speech, thanked the Board of Regents for the confidence reposed in him to carry the mantle of leadership of the institution from where Professor Ayo stopped.
While acknowledging that the task before him is not an easy one, the Vice-Chancellor is optimistic that victory would be achieved.
“When I was made the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), when I was writing my acceptance letter then, one of the things I noted was I’m fully persuaded that this can only be done exclusively by the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is pleasing that I’m currently on the mountain, and one of the scriptures I read on the mountain is Romans 9:28: ‘For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth’.
“I am convinced that victory would be achieved even before the last lap as set by our indefatigable Chancellor. Another good reason is that we are standing on a very sound foundation. It is only a privilege for us and the team coming in to be able to carry this mantle forward and we make bold to say that by His grace we shall not disappoint.”
Curtains were drawn on the unveiling ceremony with Pastor Okwuanyi asking all present to pray that God gives Professor Atayero the grace to accomplish the task before him.
Professor Atayero and Professor Ayo later met in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office at the Senate Building, where members of staff led by the Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Dr. Akan Williams, were introduced to the new helmsman.
Atayero, a professor of Communication Engineering at Covenant University, who was the pioneer Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the institution, had also served as Coordinator School of Engineering, and twice as Head of Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of the university. He joined the faculty of Covenant University as a pioneer faculty in 2002.
Professor Atayero has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radio Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Satellite Communication Systems in 1992 and 1994 respectively from the Moscow Institute of Technology, Moscow, Russian Federation. He earned his Ph.D from the Moscow State Technical University of Civil Aviation (MSTUCA) in 2000.
Atayero is a member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and other professional bodies.
He has a number of scientific papers in reputable International peer-reviewed journals and proceedings to his credit. He is on the editorial board of the Covenant Journal of Science and Technology and of several other International Journals.
The new Vice-Chancellor is a recipient of various awards and scholarships including the ‘2009 Ford Foundation Teaching Innovation Award’. His current research interests are in various aspects of Communication Engineering, including (but not limited to): Wireless Sensor Networks, Wireless (Mobile) Communications, Internet of Things (IoT), Smart Cities.
He was until his appointment Head, Covenant University Internet of Things-Enabled Smart and Connected Communities (SmartCU) Cluster.
Professor Atayero is happily married and the marriage is blessed with three children.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has made it clear that it has no interest in adopting the computer-based test (CBT) as a method in conduct of its examination.

Yusuf Ari, the Zonal Coordinator of the examination body in Abuja, disclosed this, said the council will continue to stick with the traditional method, despite the fact that the CBT greatly reduces the chances of examination malpractices during the conduction of the the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Ari mentioned that the complex nature of the WAEC test and the spread of subjects it tests would make it difficult to adopt CBT.

He added that while the method can effective, it may not be considered until after adequate facilities such as sufficient computer systems, steady power supply and other infrastructural provisions are guaranteed.

“WAEC exam is a very complex one. It may interest you to know that the council does not conduct exams in urban centers only. It penetrates through government and WAEC accredited schools in remote areas, unlike JAMB.

“We conduct examinations in over 80 subjects and many of them come in components. In fact, English language comes in three components, consisting of practical, theory and oral as the case maybe,” he said.

According to him, “Experts in education assessment believe that removing somebody from his or her place of residence, would psychologically and emotionally affect his or her performance.”

He also noted that the deployment of ICT would be difficult under such setting.

The Chinese Language Council International (HANBAN) and Xiamen University have reportedly donated a Chinese Cultural Research Centre to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Anambra State.

During the opening of the centre last week, the Cultural Attache of the Chinese Embassy in Abuja, Mr. Xiang Dong hailed the university management, saying the centre will strengthen the Nigeria-China relationship.

He said the Confucius Institute established at the university after signing the MoU has improved understanding of Chinese language among young people.

Dong also added that China’s investment in Nigeria would continue to grow, adding that this will aid the development of Nigeria.

Vice Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof Joseph Ahaneku said the MoU was signed to promote research on China and scholarly exchanges between Nigeria and China. He added that these will include the teaching of Chinese language and culture in the university and conducting Chinese Language Proficiency Tests.

Ahaneku said many students of the school are presently studying different disciplines in various Chinese universities through scholarships by Chinese government. He added that there had been staff exchange between the university and Xiamen University.

According to Ahaneku, arrangements are in top gear to deploy staff to teach Igbo language and culture in Xiamen University to reciprocate the gesture. He said UNIZIK was honoured to be first school to host Chinese Cultural Research Centre in Nigeria.

The Director of the Centre, Prof Caroline Umeobi, assured the Chinese government that the personnel working in the institute would live up to expectation.

The Commissioner of Education Enugu State, Professor Uche Eze, In a recent interview, revealed plans by the state government to revamp education.

Eze responded to speculations while Speaking to DailyTrust, that the government is clamping down on private examination centres and school principals.

He said, "we have punished so many of our teachers who were supervisors of SSCE for getting involved in one form of malpractice or the other. We are doing these things to serve as deterrent. We also noticed that some private schools are involved in some of these things. In fact, by mid-July there will be an announcement of two private schools we have closed down.

We shut them down; one, for running a substandard school and also for engaging in examination malpractice. It is not acceptable," he added.

"During the exams, I moved around with my team and unfortunately, we discovered that some people did not heed to what we preached. In fact, we are still contemplating sanctioning more schools. I can remember the name of one school involved in malpractices and when I got the report I ordered that the principal be removed immediately and made a classroom teacher because he is not worthy of that position or bring up our children.

Basically, I think we have removed five principals or more for one offence or the other because we agreed that the only way to restore and build a proper system is to ensure discipline. Everybody must be held accountable, starting from the commissioner. I have to play according to the rules; the chairman of the board has to play according to the rules, likewise the principals. When all of us that serve as models do the right thing, definitely the children will follow."

He expressed that he believed it is only by being a hands-on commissioner that he will be able to make the right changes in the education sector. He mentioned that he had visited 17 local government areas of the state and over 200 and primary and secondary schools.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday announced the suspension admissions into the law programme of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

Prof. Julius Okojie, NUC’s Executive Secretary said that the moratorium would be in place pending the resolution of issues with the Council on Legal Education (CLE).
The Council on Legal Education (CLE) has persistently disallowed NOUN’s law graduates from being admitted into the Nigerian Law School.
“This matter is being addressed because it is between us, CLE and the university.
“What we have done in the interim is stop new intake into that programme so that they do not have a backlog; we are addressing the issue.
“I must say that the law programme in National Open University (NOUN) was approved by the NUC; it is our responsibility.
