The human brain is the most complex organ in the human body and probably the most complex creation present on this universe. It is evident that, the world’s greatest man made wonders are a result of the human brain making it the most amazing feature in a human being.

1 – The human brain is the only organ in the human body that lacks nerves despite the fact that it acts as the central command for the central nervous system. This simply implies that, the human brain feels no pain.

2 – The human brain consumes the largest portion of the total energy that is generated in the human body. To be precise, the brain consumes 20% of that energy despite the fact that it only represents only 2% of the total body weight. The energy is vital for maintaining healthy brain cells and fueling nerve impulses.

3 – The number of neurons present in the brain is approximately 100 billion which is about 15 times of the total human population on earth. This high number of neurons increases the processing ability of the brain.

4 – The human brain is regarded as the fattest organ in the human body. About 60% of the human brain is comprised of fat which is the highest concentration of fat that is present in a single organ in a healthy human being. Furthermore, 75% of the total brain mass is comprised of water which regulates various functions in the brain.

5 – The neocortex is the portion of the human brain that is responsible for language and consciousness. It makes up approximately 76% of the human brain and making it the largest when compared to that in other animals.

6 – It is believed by many that, human beings use less than 10% of their brain. This is a misconception because each and every part of the brain has a known function.

7 – During early pregnancy, neurons have shown to multiply at a rate of 250,000 neurons per minute

8 – About 15-20% (750ml) of the total cardiac output is directed to the brain every minute.

9 – The energy consumed by the brain which is approximately 25 watts is sufficient enough to illuminate a light bulb.

10 – The human brain is not as perfect as it is thought of since in many instances it has been found to f**l human beings making them to perceive things differently from the reality.

There can be little doubt, the human brain is truly an incredible body organ that requires maximum care to keep vital body processes running.

A bill for a law which prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who engage in intimate relationship with students was passed for first reading in the Senate on Wednesday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege (Labour-Delta Central) and co-sponsored by 46 other senators, seeks to completely prohibit any form of intimate relationship between lecturers and their students.

Briefing newsmen after plenary, Omo-Agege said that the nation’s institutions of higher learning must be sanitised to rid them of lecturers who saw female students as “prize’’.

According to him, when the bill is passed and signed into law, any lecturer found guilty will be liable to a jail term of up to five years but not less than two years with no option of fine.

“When passed into law, it makes it a criminal offence for any educator in a university, polytechnic or any other tertiary educational institution to violate or exploit the student-lecturer fiduciary relationship for intimate pleasures.

“The bill imposes stiff penalties on offenders in its overall objective of providing tighter statutory protection for students against intimate hostility and all forms of intimate harassment in tertiary schools.

“The bill provides a compulsory five-year jail term for lecturers who sexually harass students.

“When passed into law, vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and other chief executives of institutions of higher learning will go to jail for two years if they fail to act within a week on complaints of intimate harassment made by students.

“The bill expressly allows sexually harassed students, their parents or guardians to seek civil remedies in damages against intimate predator lecturers before or after their successful criminal prosecution by the State.

“The bill also seeks to protect, from intimate harassment, prospective students seeking admissions into institutions of learning, students of generally low mental capacity and physically challenged students,’’ he stated.

The lawmaker said that it was practicable in other climes as “honour codes’’ but stressed that it should be domesticated in Nigeria in the Penal form.

The bill reads: “an educator shall be guilty of committing an offence of intimate harassment against a student if he/she has intimate intercourse with a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he has intimate intercourse with a student or demands for s*x from a student or a prospective student as a condition to study in an institution.

“He or she shall be guilty if he has intimate intercourse with a student or demands for s*x from a student or a prospective student as a condition to the giving of a passing grade.

“ He or she shall be guilty if he solicits s*x from or makes intimate advances at a student when the intimate solicitation or intimate advances result in an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for the student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he directs or induces another person to commit any act of intimate harassment under this Act, or cooperates in the commission of intimate harassment by another person.

“He or she shall be guilty if he grabs, hugs, rubs or strokes or touches or pinches the breasts or hair or lips or hips or buttocks or any other sensual part of the body of a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he displays, gives or sends by hand or courier or electronic or any other means Unclad or sexually explicit pictures or videos or s*x related objects to a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he whistles or winks at a student or screams or exclaims or jokes or makes sexually complimentary or uncomplimentary remarks about a student’s physique.’’

The bill also has provisions to sanction students who falsely accuse lecturers of intimate harassment. Such students could face dismissal from the school but no jail term was prescribed.

According to the bill, the only exemption is where the student is legally married to the lecturer before admission in the school as a student.

It states that the consent of the student shall not serve, in anyway, as a defence as the bill seeks to completely ban lecturer-student relationships.
The bill also imposes on institutions the responsibility to protect students who initiates a intimate harassment charge.

National Youth Service Corps, NYSC to protect corps members during the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states.
nysc-corps-members
The National Youth Service Corps is to work with key stakeholders for the protection of Corps members during the gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states.
Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General Suleman Kazaure, said this while answering questions from newsmen shortly after addressing Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos.
Kazaure, who reaffirmed his commitment to the safety and general welfare of Corps members, said the Scheme would evolve better strategies in conjunction with relevant agencies with a view to ensuring that no harm went the way of any Corps member during elections.
On the continuing surge in Corps population, he assured that the Management and other stakeholders in the Scheme were poised to surmount challenges occasioned by such population explosion.
While addressing Corps members at the orientation camps in both Lagos and Ogun states, Kazaure reminded them of the need to use the platform of the NYSC to promote national unity and integration in line with the dreams of its founding fathers.
“This camp community is reflective of the diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds of the larger population of Nigeria. I urge you to begin promote national integration right from this camp by regarding one another as members of the same family; and to treating one another with love and respect.
“In fact, I will be very happy to see inter-tribal marriages taking place among you,” he said.
The Director-General enjoined them to appreciate and respect the cultures of their host communities, and to contribute to the progress of such communities through the NYSC Community Development Service.
In their separate welcome remarks, the NYSC Coordinators in Lagos and Ogun States Mr. Cyril Akhanemhe and Mr. James Afolayan said the orientation course was progressing smoothly in their respective camps.

Due to some hitches experienced on JAMB change of course and institution portal lately, the 2016 JAMB Change of Course and Institution has been extended.

However, this extension will not be long. The official closing date for 2016 JAMB Change of course/institution is on Friday 13th, May 2016. There will be no further extension.

We understand that many candidates are waiting to know the cut-off marks of their respective institutions before making the decision on whether or not to go for change of course and institution. However, many of this institution usually wait until announcing their post-UTME sales of forms to make known their cut-off marks.

If you wait that long, you may have only succeeded in putting yourself in an unfavourable position because change of course and institution would have been very much over by that time.
